Best pitch/setback game available but needs improvement
Playing with real people is great and the interface works well. Only flaws are the poor AI play. If they win the bid and don't have the ace they'll lead trump with a low card and have it get scooped up, only to trump in with a king later on. Playing against the computer is almost like clockwork. The AI will hardly ever take a risk, when you're playing 4 point hands you'll win the bid nearly every time by bidding 2. In rare occurrences the computer will bid 3 when they have a monster hand and will, without question, have like ace king jack and another trump. Clearly a 4 bid. Other downside is not being able to play practice games when you are in airplane mode or don't have service. I hate to pick this app apart because it truly is great, but some glaring flaws could be fixed.
The best you’ll probably get
Pitch is a family tradition, so being able to have something like this so we can play year round is awesome! The one real downside I have with the game is playing with the computers. Often times they work really well but then probably twice per game they will throw out a 9 bid when the only have an Ace. A small complaint but nothing will ever be perfect (I make quite a few mistakes in my card playing as well.)
But this is definitely the easiest way to play pitch on a mobile device, and is something I recommend to everyone who wants to play.
Good . . . But Flawed
I play this game a lot. After thousands of games, I haven’t quit yet, but there are frustrating moments.
For the good parts, I like being able to play what folks in my area call “Hi, Low, Jack.” It’s great to be able to play real people. When real people aren’t available, the computer fills in the gaps at the table. I can play at any time of the day or night. Also, the app keeps track of player statistics.
For the bad parts, the computer players don’t play very well. They frequently spike the hand with high trump even after the hand is won by their partner, and then they lead with a low trump that gets scooped up by an opponent. They can also be manipulated into throwing a trump card just by dropping an Ace into the mix. The computer will always try to snap an Ace. Always.
Also, the game randomly makes mistakes in scoring. From what I observe, it’s usually a misattribution of the Low score. I’ve often won a Low deuce, only to see it awarded to the opposing team. The hand the prompted this review was me winning king high, deuce low, and a ten of trump in one hand against my opponent’s bid. However, the opponent was awarded those cards and three points for high, low and game.
This is the best Pitch/High, Low, Jack game I’ve seen in the App Store, but it isn’t without it’s drawbacks.
